DON'T BE FOOLED? Here's the rest of the "Don't be Fooled" story! Please notice that this clarification is not a mud-slinging negative attack ad. It's just the bare facts based on our extensive collection of documentation, including video and audio recordings of nearly every event discussed in the following piece. Grant Christensen became interested in running for the North Dakota legislature when Rep. Jim Grueneich moved to Ellendale, leaving an open house seat in District 12. Bernie Satrom approached Grant in early January about running for this open seat and took him out to supper to discuss the idea. After this meeting with Rep. Satrom, Grant called Delores Rath, Chair of Dist 12, at least twice to request a copy of the bylaws so he could review and understand the rules pertaining to his bid. She refused to give him a copy. On January 14th, letters were sent to District 12 Republicans inviting them to the endorsing convention scheduled for Feb 13th. Clearly printed at the bottom of this invitation were these words: "(dues) Must be paid by time of endorsement." Grant specifically asked her at least twice if there was any kind of stipulation regarding payment of dues to become a voting member prior to the meeting. She stated multiple times that individuals could pay at the door that evening and be eligible to vote. After deciding that he would participate in the nominating convention for the office of State House, he shared his decision with many of his friends who spread the word and generated an enthusiastic group, young and old, to come and show support at the endorsing convention. The night before the convention, a friend informed Grant that he had just discovered that the bylaws stipulated that dues must be paid ten days before the endorsing convention. Grant called Delores the morning of the meeting (2-13-201, and she confessed that she had forgotten to tell him that little detal. Stunned by this sudden revelation, Grant asked if there was any possibility that she would honor her words in the letter and consider opening the voting parameters so he could be eligible to participate as a candidate. She said she would have to talk with the Executive Committee. Arriving at the convention with a copy of this invitation in hand, Grant pointed out the contradictory information. After some discussion, at least three members of the Dist 12 Executive Committee agreed to allow those who paid at the door to vote, with clarification from Dan Vainonen saying that, "We made a determination based upon some miscommunications there that, and it's not a suspension of the rules technically, but it's an expansion of interpretation based upon executive committee decision that people that paid at the door and put their membership in would be able to vote." Representative Pollert, and Senator Wanzek of Dist. 29 counted the votes and declared Grant Christensen the top vote getter with 23 votes, Bernie Satrom second with 13 votes and Mitch Ostlie third with 9 votes. Ihe meeting adjourned without objection from any attendee or executive member, Grant secured a hand-written statement from Delores Rath after the conclusion of the nominating convention, confirming his selection as the top vote getter, and thus one of the two endorsed candidates. On Thursday, February 20th, Grant printed the official certificate of endorsement form from the Secretary of State's website, and at 6:00 p.m. Grant brought the form to District Chair Rath and secured her signature without objection, There was absolutely no manipulation or coercion, because Grant is not a bully. He is a kind and trusting young man who plays by the rules. This form was hand-delivered and officially filed with the Secretary of State's office in Bismarck on Feb 21st, making Christensen the first endorsed candidate for Representative in Dist. 12. Grant was notified from the Dist 12 Chair by email on Friday, 2-21-20, that his endorsement was no longer valid. The "Do not be Fooled" ad is erroneous on two counts. The signature was secured on Thursday evening, at 6:00 p.m. NOT at 9:30 p.m., and he was not notified that his endorsement was "revoked" until Friday. Feb 21st, rather than on Thursday the 20th as the attack-ad stated. This is where the "Don't Be Fooled" story really turns sour! Unhappy that a vibrant newcomer had won the endorsement in spite of seemingly deliberate efforts to frustrate his attempts to procure the bylaws, and the confusion created by the party's own contradictory instructions, the "old guard" quietly took a vote to invalidate the first convention and do it over again. This SECOND convention was called by select invitation only, resuilting with Satrom and Ostlie receiving the endorsements. Christensen decided not to validate or participate in the second convention on 2-22-20, in part because he was only given one day's notice and had work conflicts. Grant took the high road and simply gathered the required signatures to petition for a place on the June primary ballot instead. You will find him there when you vote! Now, it's up to the reader to decide: Support your honest candidate, the one who plays by the rules. Elect Grant Christensen to represent YOU and the rest of the taxpayers in the 12th District. It's time to restore integrity and honesty to the Republican Party.
